How to Become a Professional Photographer



Being a specialized photographer is a brilliant career choice for people who want to earn bucks using their artistic talents. It's one of the few disciplines where age or university certificates don’t really matter. And you can diversify your creative ability by experimenting on different styles and approaches. The important things you need in photography are a good eyesight, quality equipment and discipline. Photography is competitive, be prepared to start small and then you can improve your ability. To become a pro in photography, you need to consider the following:

1.   Upgrade your photography skills. Some individuals take a photography course or obtain a university degree in art with a focus on photography. Many believe that a degree is a waste of time for becoming an expert photographer so they teach themselves about photography from books and experimentation, or they learn from other professionals. Learning from other experts seems to be the most used option. If you are an amateur photographer or you’re just starting out, you can intern with a professional photographer to learn how a photography business should be run.

2.    Get the right gear. The type of gear you will use depends on the niche of photography you are into. Two camera bodies and some lenses for different circumstances will be needed for a start. A quality photo editing software is also significant. Depending on your photographic specialty, if you want to create an in-home studio, you will need additional equipment for lighting.


3. Buy equipment prudently. Do not invest all of your savings in brand new, expensive equipment before you start your career. You can buy used equipment in good working state, rent or even borrow equipment until you the business has expanded.

4.       Know how to handle your camera. Before you start earning from your photo sessions, know everything about handling a camera; learn about the setting, error message, lenses and flash of your camera. If you are not conversant with your equipment it will make you lose credibility with customers. Read the camera’s manual, it will give you a lot of detail about the features and function you need to apply. You can also experiment with different settings, take a lot of pictures in different positions, this will help you learn about light and shadow.To become really proficient, read books, magazines and online articles for the most up-to-date information on camera technology and tips.  

5.   Learn to use editing software. Quality editing software can make your photos look great. However, be careful of over-doing special effects; make the photos look as natural as it can be.

6. Decide on your niche. Try your hands on different fields of photography before deciding on one as your best. Your best niche should be the one that you are comfortable with and one that people would patronize. It could be portrait, modelling, wedding, or landscape photography.

7.    Publicize your business. Create awareness for your business after you have become skillful with the camera. You can have website, print complimentary cards, advertise on social media like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and talk about what you do with everyone you meet.

8.    Be organized. set up a working schedule and follow it. Taking pictures for clients will not just stop at clicking the camera, you will need to edit photos and print them as well. Give your clients correct deadlines and always deliver specifically according to their needs.
