Make Money Tutoring

The saying that a teacher's reward is only in heaven is becoming untrue, well of course teachers will be rewarded in heaven, but that's not to say they cannot be rewarded on earth too. Private teaching or tutoring is now a demand that cannot easily be settled because of the great thirst for knowledge by students and pupils. Education is the key to getting rid of poverty, disease and ignorance and more people are realizing this truth.

Often parents want a private tutor to come to their home to teach their kids, or, as is becoming more popular recently, to teach online. People who need to be tutored include:

1. Pupils who need help in their school work
2. Pupils and students on holidays who want to learn ahead of the next semester
3. Students who need to get extra grades
4. Students preparing for major exams such as Common Entrance, JSCE, SSCE, JAMB and the rest.
5. People who want to learn a new language such as French, English or Spanish.
6. Adults who missed out formal education and who want to learn to read and write.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TUTOR
Can you teach? Are you good with teens, kids or adults? All these questions need to be taken into consideration. In addition, you need to have some extra knowledge in the subject you want to tutor, you do not necessarily have to be a qualified teacher. You need to be patient (it takes a lot of patience to get anybody to learn something new) and also an enthusiastic communicator.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING A TUTOR

1. You teach only what you know like Music, Maths or French.
2.  Your work time is flexible- you can work on weekends or all through the week.
3. You set your own rates
4. You can tutor online, there are some sites that offer online tutoring either through lessons via Skype or hiring tutors to grade papers.

HOW TO GET TUTORING JOBS

1. Put up adverts on Sites like Craiglist, Nairaland, Facebook and ArticleHero. Make a simple ad with your rates, the subject you can handle and your credentials which may be years of experience or a teaching degree.
2. You can apply to tutoring agencies
3. Make simple posters and put in places students or parents usually pass or hang out, leave your contact details.
4. Tell neighbours, church members and relations who may be interested or who could refer clients to you.

I once made money in my neighbourhood during the Easter holiday as a tutor for primary school kids. I had about 11 kids who turned up and each paid N500 ($2). I only taught simple subjects like math, English and Christian Studies for a maximum of 2hours each day. This is a great way to earn money as long as you have the passion to add knowledge.
